Drag Queen Blogs
You’ve probably heard of blogs by now – those online journals that usually make you ask “why do I care?” instead of “wow that’s interesting.”
The best blogs usually come from celebrities who post tidbits about their private lives as opposed to strangers in cyberspace who think people are interested in what they ate for lunch. Moby’s blog and Rosie O’Donnell’s blog, for example, are widely read and have interesting viewpoints on topics as diverse as fame and homosexuality (ok, maybe those topics aren’t really that diverse).
In any case, no one has ever really talked about our favorite drag queen blogs – or what I’ll call “drogs.” Here’s a rundown of the best drag journalists:
You’ve seen Lady Bunny on "Sex and the City" and Britney Spears’ MTV special, but you may not know that Wigstock’s founder is actually one of our own! Raised in the South (Chattanooga), Lady Bunny even knew Heather Daniels before she did drag! Unlike RuPaul’s blog, which focuses on the fast and the frivolous, Lady Bunny’s is geared more toward political activism. Some of her most recent posts are titled “Dish on Bush Daughters,” “Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Wrote Me,” and “Bush’s Tricycle Ride.”
In fact, she says that although “I like to post twisted stuff to make people laugh, in order to stay sane I have to vent about all the terrible things going on in the world.” She also says that one of her favorite posts is called “$35,000 Cab Ride,” where she charges George Bush with murder due to the war in Iraq.
If you’re not that into politics, check out the Bunny Blog for its hilarious semi-sick photos, like the one of a 300 pound woman sitting on a guy’s face called “Arkansas Death Penalty.” Lady Bunny says that although the main purpose of her blog is to keep fans updated on her appearances and happenings around New York City, she also wants to “stimulate people to think and get involved,” saying “I know that if people knew the truth about Bush, there would be widespread outrage.”
RuPaul was an early adopter: she started her blog in November of 2001 before most of us had ever even heard of blogs. Although she’s known as one of the world’s most G-rated drag queens, journaling online allows Ru to let it all hang out, which she obviously can’t do when she’s onstage.
For instance, one of her recent posts graphically-depicts her first trip to get a colonic while another praises gay porn star Owen Hawk (obviously one of her favorites) for his new movie Mutiny: “I’m happy to report that he’s as nasty as ever in this one. What a powerhouse! Bravo, you sexy devil! Work your f*ckin’ legacy!”
But Ru’s posts aren’t all about filth and fornication (although they’re usually her most interesting). Take, for instance, this post about attending Jackie Collins’ book release party at Denise Rich’s apartment: “I’ve been to countless parties at Denise’s apartment overlooking Central Park. In fact, it was at one of her parties that I met the great David Bowie. Attending last night’s party was Regis Philbin, that negro woman from "The View", Tony Danza, Neil Sedaka, Joan and her husband Percy Gibson, and about twenty members of the press.” Sounds like fun – but why do I get the feeling that RuPaul doesn’t like Star Jones?
Now that Atlanta’s own Raven is performing at Charlie Brown’s Cabaret, you can read about her latest adventures in the “Goddess Raven” blog. Raven’s online journal is the most introspective and personal of all the drag queen blogs, with posts like “Granddad is doing much better, and when I kissed him good-bye, he didn’t say anything like ‘well son, I don’t know if I will make it till you come back home. Just know that I love you’ he looked very happy and said ‘I will see you on Easter’ so that gives me a lot of hope.” A few days later he passed away, but the good new is that Raven still has her grandmother who she talks about in posts like “Denim Barby Bitch”: “Me and grandma made [my costume] out of old jeans and overalls while I was in Oklahoma. Grandma helped me bead the turquoise and silver beads onto leather lacing.” It’s nice to know that some grandmothers have actually moved past knitting and crocheting!
While most blogs consist of hard to decipher streams-of-consciousness, Amnesia Sparkles’ is perhaps the most organized. Neatly categorized into categories like “Life Lessons,” “Story Time,” and “Novellas,” Amnesia also includes links to hilarious audio “interviews” with the likes of Victoria Gotti, Anna Nicole Smith, and Paula Abdul. She’s also a pretty good astrologist, dishing out advice in a column called “Ass-trological Match.”
Amnesia says she started blogging because “it was cheaper than paying my shrink: it’s very cathartic.” When asked what she hopes readers will take away from her blog, she says “I just hope they don’t walk away with some kind of rash or STD…if a smile makes its way to my reader’s face I know I’ve done my job. If they pee in their pants a little from laughter or they accidentally let one rip from uncontrollable giggling, I can die a happy queen.”
