Matthew Duffy: Exclusive Interview
Matthew Duffy sat down with us after wrapping his first music video -- "Electric Shock" -- in Atlanta (featuring gay Atlanta favorites Shebazz and Jealouse').
"Performing this type of music feels the most natural for me," Duffy says, speaking of the electro-pop dance he's recently been noticed for.
Originally from Boston, Matthew Duffy moved to New York City to attend the Tisch School of the Arts where he majored in ballet. Later he started working with Jaksmusic producer Neil Krin, who had previously worked with Celine Dion, Kristine W and the "Popstars" television series.
A couple of years later, Duffy and Krin began collaborating on Matthew Duffy's debut album, "Here I Come." "We really clicked," Duffy says. "It's hard to find the right combination of people to work with. He really pushes me creatively."
Duffy, whose parents live in Sandy Springs, recently came to Atlanta to film his first music video, "Electric Shock" for director Zachary McBride. He says he's inspired by the Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, Depeche Mode and Bjork. "Bjork is probably the biggest role model for me...she has just the right combination of artistry and artistic vision." Gay Atlanta favorites Shabazz and Jealouse' appeared in the rough cut of the video, but were cut from the final version.
Today Duffy's busy performing at clubs in New York like Therapy, Barracuda and XL as well as outdoor music festivals. He's also learning how to play guitar, and will soon perform his new single in Paris. "I can't wait to go. Europeans respect electronic music--they really like it over there."
