Candler Park Atlanta
Originally a Union camp during the Civil War, the area known as Edgewood (which later became Candler Park) was formed in 1890.
Soon after the war, Edgewood began to prosper with its own government, schools, and utilities until 1908, when its citizens decided they wanted to be part of the city of Atlanta. In the 1920s, Asa Candler had the area graded to fill in a large valley and remove a hill, which destroyed many of the original homes in the area but created Candler Park.
In the 1960s, the neighborhood began to flourish again and never slowed down. In the 1970s and 80s, Candler Park became popular with lesbians, who purchased many of the neighborhood's craftsman bungalow homes before real estate prices went up. Today, Candler Park "nurtures the eclectic"--residents include poets, activists, musicians, lawyers, and business professionals.
Candler Park's small but thriving business district is also one of the most gay-friendly areas of town, with great eateries like Fellini's Pizza and the Flying Biscuit.
