Decatur Georgia
Founded in 1823, the city of Decatur was named after U.S. naval hero Stephen Decatur.
It is the second oldest municipality in the metropolitan Atlanta area. The main downtown courthouse square, which is located where two Indian trails once crossed, is still a gathering place for the community and its many festivals.
Although there were plans to make the city a major stop on the new Western and Atlantic Railroad line in the 1830s, local residents objected because they feared the noise and pollution from the rail line would be too much for them to bear. So, the railroad moved to a small city called Terminus, which later became Atlanta.
Today, Decatur is a small city of 18,000 six miles east of downtown Atlanta. Known for its thriving performing arts and music scene (the Indigo Girls got their start here), the city is also home to many fabulous restaurants. Decatur is a very gay-friendly area.
