Grant Park Atlanta

Grant Park was given to the city of Atlanta in 1883 by entrepreneur Lemuel P. Grant, who is described as one of the founding fathers of Atlanta.

In addition to acting as an agent of both the Western and Atlantic Railroad and the Georgia Seaboard Air Line Railroad (which intersected at Terminus), Grant also served as an engineer during the Civil War.

He helped plan the Confederate Army's defensive lines around Atlanta and continued to serve the city as a member of the city council and as one of the authors of a new city charter in 1873. After several decades of steady development, Grant Park and the surrounding neighborhoods were devastated by the construction of Interstate 20, which split the area in two.

Recently revitalized, Grant Park has become one of the first Atlanta neighborhoods to spur a rebirth of the "intown" area. In the year 2000 it was named the largest historic district in Atlanta. The neighborhood's families--both gay and straight--have made Grant Park one of Atlanta's most beloved communities.
