After moving to Atlanta, he helped serve food to AIDS patients with Project Open Hand. Since then, the Elton John AIDS Foundation (incorporated in Atlanta) has raised over $125 million to support HIV/AIDS programs in 55 countries across the globe.
In 1998, Elton teamed up with Tim Rice to produce Elaborate Lives: The Legend of Aida. He chose Atlanta's Alliance Theatre for the world premiere where he would often drop in on rehearsals, and after several small changes, took the production to Chicago and then Broadway as Aida. He also wrote any of the songs for his Broadway musical Billy Elliott in Atlanta.
Elton John is believed to own the largest private photography collection in the world. In 2001, he exhibited part of his collection to the public for the first time at Atlanta's High Museum of Art. The exhibit was called Chorus of Light: Photographs from the Sir Elton John Collection and featured 380 works by more than 180 renowned photographers (his entire collection spans over 1,200 works).
In 1991, Elton purchased a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud MK3 from an Atlanta dealer. He named it Daisy after the movie Driving Miss Daisy because it was filmed near his Atlanta home in Buckhead, but later had it restored in the United Kingdom before selling it.
In 2004, Elton recorded the album Peachtree Road, named after the street he lives on in Atlanta.
