Dave Matthews Raises $1M for Piedmont Park

Dave Matthews Piedmont Park can now count Dave Matthews as its latest celebrity benefactor...

Matthews, who kicks off his "green concert" at Piedmont Park on September 8, will raise over $1 million for the park's 53-acre expansion. The benefit concert (which includes the Allman Brothers) expects to draw 50,000 fans and will be the largest show on Dave Matthews Band's 2007 U.S. Tour.

Dave Matthews has long been an environmental supporter along with his wife Ashley, who grew up in Vinings and attended The Westminster Schools in Buckhead along with us in 1992. The couple now has twins and lives in Seattle. Two days before his Piedmont Park concert, Matthews will perform a free concert at Virginia Tech for student body and faculty along with John Mayer, Phil Vassar, and NaS.

Gates open at 4 p.m. for general admission, the Allman Brothers perform from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and Dave Matthews performs from 8:05 p.m. until 11 p.m. when the park closes.

W Atlanta Midtown Opens In February

W Midtown Atlanta If you've driven past the Sheraton Midtown Atlanta on 14th Street at night recently, you may have noticed that all the windows were dark...

That's because the hotel closed on July 8th, but will re-emerge on February 8th as the highly-anticipated W Atlanta Midtown, making the corner of 14th and Piedmont hipper than it already is with Tap, Shout, Trois, and Piedmont Park all right next door.

When it opens, the W Atlanta Midtown will feature a lavish bar/lounge called Living Room, Bliss Spa, and Altitude, a "private meeting spot atop the city," plus the WET pool and SWEAT fitness center.

Rooms will feature 32" flat-panel TVs, signature W beds, the Bliss-ful sinkside six (we assume this means Bliss products), and Whatever/Whenever service. This means that as a guest you can request whatever you want whenever you want it,  like 10 strippers from Swinging Richards delivered pronto, right?. If someone from the hotel is reading this, you may want to start figuring that one out before Pride... just a heads up :)

Tyler Perry's New Atlanta Home

OK I admit it -- I'm a stalker. But I couldn't resist snapping these photos of Tyler Perry's new massive home being built here in Atlanta right near my parents. Now I can only pray that my mom will take him some cookies, Tyler will invite her over to have dinner with Oprah, and I can meet Nate Berkus.

Gay Atlanta -- Cheap But Pretty

We always knew Atlanta was a top -- it recently came out #1 and #7 respectively in the following national categories: Cheapest Bargains and Most Impressive Skyline.

First, Hotwire.com ranked Atlanta #1 for it's "travel value index" of "deep discounts, affordable entertainment, and wide variety of quality hotels." Then the Emporis Standards Committee ranked Atlanta #7 for "Most Impressive Skyline."

Here's the list (we're 39th in the world in case you're wondering, but we beat out Paris and Madrid!):

Underground Atlanta

Located in the heart of Downtown and covering six city blocks, Underground Atlanta was once just a rail yard.

Over time, however, the city built up and over the rail lines. When the tracks were no longer needed, the abandoned sub-level was turned into a mixed-use development. Thus Underground Atlanta was born.

Today there are over 100 specialty stores, restaurants, and bars in Underground (as it's known to locals). Recent additions are Future -- a high-energy dance club, Alley Cat (a rock and roll restaurant and bar), Latin Sol (a salsa club with the largest wooden dance floor in Atlanta), Island Oasis (a show bar), Koco's Latin Restaurant and Bar (a Caribbean restaurant and karaoke bar), Jamaica Jamaica (a restaurant and bar with live reggae), and Irish Breed (an Irish pub).

A special exception to the city laws allows you to go from bar to bar with drink in had until 4 a.m. (Bars in other parts of the city must close by 3 a.m. and public consumption of alcohol is prohibited).

Virginia-Highlands Atlanta

In 1925, the Atlanta Street Railway Company began selling pieces of land for suburban development.

Developers bought large plots and divided them into areas for residential and commercial use. This growth continued steadily until the 1960s, when most of the city's original suburbs including the Virginia-Highlands began to decline.

In the 1970s, the Highlands were swept up in a wave of revitalization that was also bringing new life to surrounding areas. Proposed freeway construction threatened to crush this renaissance, but the idea was defeated by the community.

In 1988, John Howell Park on Virginia Avenue was dedicated to the memory of Highlands resident John Howell, one of the many residents who fought hard to stop the development of I-485. The park occupies three acres of land where 11 homes were demolished for the proposed highway. Howell died from complications of HIV in 1988.
